I&amp;#39;m not sure what to think of your opening line about how our nation no longer makes things.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The United States is the third largest exporter in the world. We&amp;#39;re also a leading manufacturer of heavy industrial equipment, high tech commodities, bio-tech in both medicine and agriculture, and on and on. Just because imports are the most easily seen and present commodities in our lives, doesn&amp;#39;t mean we&amp;#39;re not creating things of value. Also, landlords and developers just want to make money and I&amp;#39;m skeptical that motivation correlates to an environment conducive to creativity. I do appreciate some of the research being done trying to highlight and quantify the economic contributions of these sectors, but I&amp;#39;d rather see grantmaking foundations, better education and public art institutions than fancy housing for &amp;quot;artists&amp;quot;.</content><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/17619508/3774469681819384104/comments/default/1032739420217214462'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/17619508/3774469681819384104/comments/default/1032739420217214462'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://www.vigorousnorth.com/2011/09/creative-destruction.html?showComment=1317246008014#c1032739420217214462' title=''/><author><name>Gabe Peterson</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/15449991394249816402</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image xmlns:gd='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005' rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:in-reply-to xmlns:thr='http://purl.org/syndication/thread/1.0' href='http://www.vigorousnorth.com/2011/09/creative-destruction.html' ref='tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17619508.post-3774469681819384104' source='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/17619508/posts/default/3774469681819384104' type='text/html'/><gd:extendedProperty xmlns:gd='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005' name='blogger.itemClass' value='pid-626806001'/></entry></feed>
